An easier way of describing these is with the phrase “vanilla cupcakes filled with pastry cream and topped with chocolate” but that takes some of the character out of them. This offshoot of the the official state dessert of Masachusetts (which is Boston Cream Pie, in case you were wondering) consists of a straight-up (non-fancy) vanilla cupcake base, which is then filled with a homemase vanilla pastry cream. The dark chocolate and whipped cream ganache frosting is the perfect topping and adds a bit of contrast.
